6. What Is BIOS In Operating System?

Answer: The Basic Input Output System, usually referred to as BIOS, is a software stored on a small memory chip on the motherboard. BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a program which a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. BIOS instructs the computer on how to perform a number of basic functions such as booting and keyboard control.

BIOS is also used to identify and configure the hardware in a computer such as the hard drive, floppy drive, optical drive, CPU, memory, etc.


7. What Are The Advantages & Disadvantages Of Multiprocessor Systems?

Answer: Advantages of Microprocessor Systems are:
  • Increased throughput - With more processors, more work can be accomplished in less time.
  • Economy of scale - Peripheral devices may be shared amongst multi-processor systems.
  • Increased reliability - If one processor crashes, then the others may continue to operate.

Disadvantages of Microprocessor Systems are:
  • Multiprocessor systems are more complex in both hardware and software.
  • Additional CPU cycles are required to manage the cooperation, so per-CPU efficiency goes down.
One disadvantage of a multi-processing system is the additional complexity in operating system and possibly application software.


8. What Are The Main Differences Between Operating Systems For Mainframe Computers & Personal Computers?

Answer: PC OS's are not concerned with fair use or maximal use of computer resources. Instead, they try to optimize the usefulness of the computer for an individual user, usually at the expense of overall efficiency. Mainframe OS's need more complex scheduling and I/O algorithms to keep the various system components efficiently occupied.


9. What Are The Five Major Activities Of An Operating System In Regard To Process Management?

Answer: Five major activities of an operating system in regard to process management are:
  • Creating and deleting processes.
  • Suspending and resuming processes.
  • Process synchronization.
  • Process communication.
  • Handling process deadlock.


10. What Are The Three Major Activities Of An Operating System In Regard To Memory Management?

Answer: The three major activities of an os in regards to memory management are:
  • Tracking what parts of memory are being used and by whom.
  • Deciding which processes are to be loaded into memory.
  • Allocating and de-allocating memory for processes.
